Research has shown that working at heights in Europe only cause more than 600.000 accidents because the workers did not take the proper safety training. Over a 1.000 are fatal injuries and more than 50.000 are causing some kind of disability.
Working with a Partner
One thing that everyone that works on heights needs to know is to never work at heights alone! People do this mistake often because they can get all the resources up there by themselves and think that they don’t need additional help. But they are wrong, you need to have a partner if working at heights. If you are working on ladders, you need at least a spotter that will hold the ladder and preventing it from moving and falling, he can also watch out for other hazards that might injure you while you are working. Sometimes the partner can’t do anything to save you from an injury, but he will be there to call 911 if needed.
Having a Plan
It is extremally important to plan out everything with your partner before going up. Every small detail must be planned out like what should you do in case of emergency. Plan out carefully even the project you are working on, make a list of things that you will need up there, that will save you a lot of time because you don’t need to go up and down constantly for equipment. If everything is planned out beforehand the chances of an injury are decreased by a lot and the work will be done much faster.
If you are afraid of heights consider changing the job, but if you don’t have any other choice then you must calm all your fears of heights. Going up shaking will just add additional risk to the job, your mind must be clear when going up. At high altitude or any height in that matter, two things are crucial balance and focus. To be focused you need to clear your mind from any fear, as for the balance you need a lot of strength mental and physical.
