Travel Tips Currency: The monetary unit is the PESO. Currency can be exchanged at banks or casa de cambio (exchange houses). ATMs are widely available throughout Mexico. Acceptance of U. S. dollars is widespread, although change will be given in pesos. Bank debit cards and major credit cards are welcome at most establishments. Documentation: U.S. (permanent residents) visitors are not required to have a valid passport, but must show proof of citizenship such as an expired passport (within the past 5 years), certified birth certificate or voter's registration card or , of course, a passport. Electricity: Mexico uses the same 60 cycle, 110-volt current as the U.S. Hair dryers, cell phone chargers, lap tops, etc. work just fine. But, be sure to have a surge protector with you for your lap top - prudent advice. Water: Deluxe hotels and restaurants provide drinkable water. When in doubt, ask for bottled water.
